VOL. IV. NO. 56. CHICAGO, SUNDAY AND MONDAY, MABCH 6-7, 1898. PRICE, 5 CENTS
KENTUCKY DEKI5Y AND OAKS.
The owners of twenty-four three-year-olds en-
tered in the Kentucky Derby have thought well
• enough of the chances of their horses to make
payment of the final forfeits.
The Kentucky Derby is not the most valuable
three-year-old event of the western turf, but his-
torical prestige, public opinion and the early
date of its decision combine to render it in some
■ respects the most important. Last year it was
rightly deemed to be certain to fall to either
Ornament or Typhoon II, this causing the field
to be a small one, but it has a more open aspect
this year, and with so many left in it is quite
probable that a large number of contestants
will go to the post. Those left in, their owners
and breeding are as follows :

SOME EASTERN TWO-YEAR OLDS.
The weather has been so mild and open lately
that horses at the eastern tracks have been given
an unusual amount of exercise for so early in
the year. The result is that they are measur-
ably advancing in training and many of the
smart 2-year-olds have been allowed to give
glimpses of their speed. Concerning some of this
age the turf correspondent “Kelston,” beginning
with W. C. Daly’s, says:
‘ This famous horseman has engaged Fiea
Berlew’ to train, and is sending his lot along
with a view to having them ready for Bennings.
There are several smartish 2-year-olds in the
string. Rusher, a chestnut colt by Magnetizer
out of Rushlight, dam of Swamp Angel, is very
fast. He worked a quarter over the Brooklyn
track on Tuesday morning in 23i seconds, which
is something extraordinary for this season of
the year.
“The Keene string, in charge of ‘Tom’ Greene,
were all out and did trotting and cantering
exercise. All the 2-year-olds are coming on
nicely, while the St. Leonards— Dart Maiden
colt and the Meddler— Anoma colt struck mo
(the latter in particular; as having improved
greatly in the last six weeks.
“This latter is quite a classy looking young-
ster and has perfect action. The St. Leonards
—Dart Maiden colt is lengthy and well fur-
nished, with good bone, and shows a great deal
of quality. I will be disappointed if he does
not prove a bit out of the common. Another St.
Leonards colt that I think highly of is the
chestnut out of the Mortemer mare Vanduora,
in Albert Cooper’s string, and owned jointly by
Foxhall Keene and J. G. Follansbee. He has
not quite the scope and range of the Dart
Maiden colt in James R. Keene’s string, but he
is a nicely patterned, beautifully balanced
youngster, and is undoubtedly very speedy.
“This colt fetched only a few hundred dollars
when sold as a yearling and his owners have
only recently refused an offer of $10,000 for him.
With the elder Mr. Keene offering $15,000 for
the Hiudoo— Bonnie Gal colt, also a Castleton
bred one, it seems a pity he did not train all
these promising 2-year-olds instead of selling
them, as, all m one string, they would have
been away above the average.
“In addition to the above, there are two Cas-
tleton bred ones in the Sensation Stable lot that
are very good lookers. They are Ocean Prince
by Hyderabad Ocean Queen and Magic Prince
by Tournament— Cinderella, by Hermit. And in
J. E. Seagram’s string the St. Leonards— Citron-
elle colt is highly thought of by the veteran
trainer Charles Boyle, while still another is a
chestnut colt out of Paradox in T. Parrett’s
string, which I saw breeze a quarter on Tues-
day morning through the stretch at Brighton.
This is a lengthy, racy looking colt, with a long
reach and very fast, as, indeed, are all of the
get of St. Leonards.”

GOSSIP OF THE TURF.
The stewards of the Pacific Coast Jockey Club
met last Monday night and made the following
announcements: Owner Stanfield and stable
suspended for the balance of this week. Steeple-
chase Jockey Sanford and stable suspended in-
definitely. Steeplechase Jockey Barry sus-
pended. Owner Honig and stable reinstated.
Le Fevre, trainer for the Honig stable, sus-
pended indefinitely. Stanford’s suspension is
for his ride on Silverado, Stanfield’s for the
bad showing made by George Miller, Le Fevre’s
for the general in-and-out running of the Honig
horses. The reinstatement of the Honig stable
and owner surprised a few, but not many. It
was probably shown that the St. Louis turfman
did not handle his own horses, hence was not
responsible for their acrobatic feats. The rein-
statement of J. D. Lewis, owner of Trance
(whoso case is a parallel one) should immedi-
ately follow, if the officials desire to be con-
sistent.— Breeder and Sportsman.
A car load of valuable horses, mostly Barney
Schreiber’s left San Francisco for St. Louis last
Monday. The superbly bred stallion Sain, and
the mares Charmion, Marjorie, Grand Lady,
Prize, Florence Dickey and Miss Baker will be
sent to the Woodlands stud near St. Louis.
The 2-year-olds will be trained for the spring
races and should do well, as they are royally
bred, one being a filly by Flambeau— Fairy Rose,
dam of Fairy, Racine, Sweet Rose and Rosor-
monde, and the other a colt by the great race
horse Tenny — Fun, by Fiddler. Osric, who was
bought at the last Burns & Waterhouse sale for
C. C. Maffitt, president of the Turf Congress,
was sent along in the same car. McLemore’s
Kowalsky was included in the shipment.
NOTES OF THE TURF.
Henry Brown, the little colored lightweight
who graduated from Virginia Bradley’s stable,
and rode last season for W. D. Randall, the
Montana horseman, has signed to ride this sea-
son for Timmons & Marks, owners of Marquise,
Montell, Attainment and others. Bob Marks
will ship the horses to Memphis in a few days
and get ready for the spring meetings. Blakely
will send Capt. Peirsal and Snowdown in the
same car, and J. T. Stewart will send a couple.
—San Francisco Examiner.
Johnny Campbell has made up his mind to
start Senator Bland exclusively on a hard track.
“I have decided that the Senator is not a mud-
lark.” said he. “He showed me that in his last
race. As long as this rain keeps up I’ll keep him
in the stable. The other day, when he ran such
an awful race, I bet on him, supposing he could
win in that kind of going, which did not look so
bad. But he slipped and slid all over the track.
He wants a hard track.— San Francisco Bulle-
tin.
Before the racing at New Orleans Thursday,
with Col. Bill Scully officiating as auctioneer,
the following horses changed owners: Jim
Flood, $250, C. Patterson; Tremona, $150, Tex
Forman; Brennan, $50, N. Blardore; Lady Dun-
dee, $60, Mr. Schulhofer; La Verne, $15, Mr.
Gehrke; Christmas Eve, $120, J. H. Smith;
Nikola Tesla, $100, Wm. Newman; .Margaret
Eastin, $105, R. E. Maddox; May Fair, $30, Mr.
Gehrke.
Hawfinch, a prominent candidate for the Eng
lish Derby, was recently sold for $25,000, and a
contingency in the event of his winning. Gold-
finch, the sire of Hawfinch, is now at the Rancho
del Paso Stud, California, the property of Mr.
J. B. Haggin. Goldfinch is also the sire of Gold
Scratch, a winner in this country this season,
I as well as the sire of the great English mare
Chelandry.
